I'd like to take this opportunity to update you on the FY13 budget development. The School Committee (SC) concluded hearing from directors at its December 21st meeting with presentations of the technology and professional development budgets. In addition, at that meeting the Committee received a consultant's cost analysis of the savings in outsourcing SPED transportation to North River Collaborative (NRC). As the school department stands to save a little under $100,000 (with the town saving an additional $110K), the SC determined to invite NRC to its January 4th SC meeting to address specific transportation questions prior to making a decision. Originally, the SC was going to present its budget to Town Manager, Selectmen and the Advisory Committee on January 9th; however, since decisions still need to be made, we asked for a postponement to a later date in January.

Upon a discussion with the Town Manager regarding a date change, it was determined that the SC would hold an additional budget meeting on January 10th (high school multi - purpose room at 7 P.M.) with the Town Manager to discuss the school department's FY13 budget needs. It is my hope that the potential of increased Local Aid and in particular, Chapter 70 aid, as well as an increase in projected town revenues will have a positive impact on our budget.

Let me unequivocally state, that the School Committee, the administrators and I do not feel that any FY13 personnel cuts are good cuts. Furthermore, these cuts will erode the quality of education that all of us have come to expect for all students. It is critical that the school department's fiscal slide does not continue for a fourth year with another level funded (reduction) budget. I will update you if something should change regarding the meeting on January 10th.
