Center/Sylvester Elementary School

It is the expectation of the school community that all students behave in a safe and respectful manner so that each student has the opportunity to thrive in a school culture that focuses on learning. The staff has consistently outlined the expected behaviors for all students in each area of their school day. Below is information on both positively reinforcing the expected behaviors and the consequences for not following the school rules.

The theme this year is to show the qualities of a STAR student at Center/Sylvester School. The STAR acronym stands for Respect, Right Choices and Responsibility. Our curriculum through Students who display STAR behavior may receive a STAR card. Part of STAR behavior program is to recognize that student behavior often reflects the character traits we learn about in school including: responsibility, honesty, citizenship, tolerance, respect, compassion, perseverance, pride, courage, sportsmanship. Students caught displaying star behavior will be given a star slip and should bring half of the slip home to you and drop the other half in the STAR box at the office. It is our hope that your child talks about their STAR card recognition with you.

Often parents ask the teacher or administrator “what happens if my child breaks a rule at school?”

If a student breaks a rule in school….
  • he/she gets a verbal reminder.
If a student continues with the same behavior or breaks the rule again….
  • he/she must write their name in the classroom log.
If the same behavior persists….
  • the student will complete a reflection sheet about the rule they broke and bring it home for parent discussion/signature.

If the behavior is deemed to be physically and verbally abusive or impacts the safety of self or others, the student will be referred to an administrator and the above steps will be skipped.

Referral to the Administrator
First Referral
  • Student meets with an administrator
  • Review school rules
  • Student is encouraged to share the meeting with their parent
  • Administrator will call if student appears overly concerned or needs support to share the information.
Second Referral
  • Student meets with an administrator
  • Student referral is written in log and call is made home.
  • Student completes reflection sheet during a recess.
Third Referral
