As we anticipate and prepare for the
holidays and celebrations at Center
Sylvester we have a few interesting facts
and important reminders for you.
In the United States the prevalence of
childhood obesity tripled between 1980 and
2000. Obesity is linked to and has been
shown to contribute to conditions such as.
diabetes, high blood pressure, and
depression.
Food allergy prevalence has increased 55%
during the last five years, with 40-50%of
those affected at high risk for anaphylaxis.
At Center Sylvester we recognize that food
is a part of our school culture. We
recognize that foods made available at
school should be healthy. as well as safe
for students who have various identified
food allergies.
Classroom celebrations now focus on children
rather than food. If food is a part of a
celebration, it is a healthy food. In a
partnership with students and parents our
schools can take advantage of classroom
celebrations to serve foods that taste good,
are nutritious, and provide students with an
opportunity for nutrition education. At the
same time we can provide food that is
allergen free for the classmates who have
allergies to various ingredients.
Let’s work together to keep our children
healthy. If you want to learn about
healthful school food choices and non food
rewards there are multiple web sites
available. A few have been listed at the
bottom of this page. If a school celebration
is being planned the school nurse, the
classroom teacher and the parent need to
collaborate to make it a healthy
celebration.
Remember, research clearly demonstrates that
good nutrition is linked to better behavior
and academic performance. For children to
get the most out of their educational
experience we feel that our school should
provide an environment that supports healthy
behaviors.
