Welcome Back!
September, 2008

Dear Students,
I hope that you had a great summer, read a lot, played outside, traveled and are coming back to school refreshed! I would like to introduce our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Jessica Crafton. She will be here to greet you on the opening days. She has just returned from Texas to Massachusetts and is a huge Red Sox fan. Her dog is even named “Sox”. We are anxious to hear your stories about camp, family vacations, and the many other adventures you had this summer! We look forward to seeing you on the first day of school!

Mrs. DeGrenier

VISITING DAY FOR STUDENTS and PARENTS in GRADES 1-4
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2
2:15-3:15
Please join us on this day to meet your new teacher and classmates

Summer Reading
In June we asked that you read-a-lot over the summer and keep track of how many minutes read! Some students joined the John Curtis Library summer reading program, and kept track of their minutes using the JCL reading log or the one we sent home at the end of the school year. Please bring your reading log to school any day between September 3th-10th and give it to your teacher. We will log in your minutes for your class and then add them together as a whole school. You will hear how well we did at our summer reading celebration. The staff at Center/Sylvester School is planning a reading celebration for Friday, September 12th to celebrate all of the reading that you did over the summer and kick off our year-long reading program. Don’t forget to read the required book for your grade!

Food Allergies
Several students in our school have food allergies and some students even have food allergies that are life threatening. Students can have an allergic reaction not only from eating peanut butter and nuts but also from touching any food product that contains peanut butter and nuts. Allergic reactions pose a very serious threat to some individuals and prevention is vital. Sometimes foods you assume to be safe are not at all. For example, hot chocolate mixes, flavoring for candies, popcorn.
Because of the seriousness of these allergies it is important that we work together to make a safe school environment. Here are some things you can do at home and we will do in school to assist in making a safe school for all students.

Wash hands after every meal, especially those involving peanut butter

Inform household members, such as older siblings, nannies, grandparents, or baby-sitters who may prepare food. Please be sure they have this school information.

Never share food at school or on the bus

Eat all food at home before going to the bus stop or in the cafeteria at school

Consult your child’s teacher prior to sending food products to school

Read food labels and become familiar with the many snacks and foods which are nut free (our nurses will be sending a list home in September)

The school does provide hand wipes in classrooms and all common areas and students are good about using them after eating. We realize that many students love peanut butter and for some it is a staple in their diet. We will continue to offer nut and nut free tables in the cafeteria for each classroom. We ask that all students/families work together to provide a safe school environment.
