Update on the Hanover Schools Curriculum Design Teams School Year 2007-2008
The Hanover Schools’ administrative team determined that curriculum writing is a priority of the school district. In the school year 2006-2007, the team determined that a focus on mathematics was necessary in order to increase student performance levels in the Advanced and Proficient categories on the MCAS. A Curriculum Design Team in Mathematics for Kindergarten – Grade 12 was the first team to convene and they met throughout the school year to prioritize standards and categorize each standard as Mastery, Developing, or Enriching. Standards were unpacked and then standards were benchmarked according to academic assessment periods. Assessments were written during the summer. Additional assessments need to be completed.

The K-12 English Language Arts Design Team convened during August 2007 to prioritize standards and categorize each as Mastery, Developing, or Enriching. The team then participated in a discussion that that focused on a vertical alignment of the standards to ensure conceptual development of topics during academic grade spans. The team established the first draft of Mastery, Developing, and Enriching standards. The Assistant Principals provided professional development on how to unpack – or perform a task analysis on a standard.

The K-12 Science & Technology/Engineering Design Team also convened during August 2007 to prioritize standards and categorize each standard as Mastery, Developing, or Enriching. The team then participated in a discussion that that focused on a vertical alignment of the standards to ensure conceptual development of topics during academic grade spans. A topic for discussion was the decision to move Biology to grade nine so that students could pass the MCAS requirement for science testing in grade nine. The team from the high school wanted further discussion regarding the Middle School science pathway so that Life Science was taught in grade eight to strengthen the vertical alignment for students. The team established the first draft of Mastery, Developing, and Enriching standards.

Much work was completed in the school year 2006-2007, but additional work remains in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science & Technology/Engineering. The information on the following identifies the work that needs to be completed for each subject and a timeline.
