School Health Information
 

  School Health Services
  The nurses are integral members of the educational team who assist each child develop his/her full potential, physically, mentally and socially. The nurses do provide comprehensive health services, teach disease prevention strategies, and promote of healthy lifestyles.

The Role of the School Nurse includes:

  1. Providing acute and emergency care for students and staff
  2. Conducting mandated health screenings
  3. Providing health counseling and education
  4. Administering medication and performing assessment
  5. Developing Individual Health Care Plans for students with special health care needs
  6. Interpreting immunization and health screening data
  7. Providing resources to access primary health care services
  8. Promoting environmental health and safety
  9. Providing linkage to community resources
  10. Collaborating with community agencies and accessing resources via the world wide web.
  When should your child stay home from school?
 
bullet When your child has a contagious illness such as strep throat, flu, or chicken pox.
bullet When your child has had a fever of 101° F or above within the past 24 hours.
bullet When your child has red/pink eyes or drainage from the eyes.
bullet When your child is vomiting, has diarrhea, or is unable to manage his/her secretions.
bullet When your child has head lice or nits. (In this case the child must be seen by the school nurse before returning to school.)
bullet If your child does not have proof of all required immunizations.

Please Note:

bullet Please notify the school nurse if your child is out of school for an extended period of time and/or under the care of a physician.
bullet A note is required each time a student is absent.
bullet A physician’s certificate is required for absences of five (5) or more days.
bullet Written notifications from the physician and parent/guardian are required when it is necessary to excuse a child from physical education. Such notification should clearly detail restrictions and identify date when participation in the physical education program may resume.
bullet Immunizations and physical examinations must be in compliance and up to date with state regulations.

  Medication Policy
 
bullet Hanover Schools Health Services encourages parents/guardians, whenever possible, to administer medications before and/or after school.
 
bullet Medications needed during school hours, must be administered by the nurse. A physician’s order and parent/guardian permission form with the medication are required.
 
bullet All medications must be delivered to the school in a pharmacy or manufacturer labeled container by the parent/guardian or responsible adult. No child is permitted to bring medication to school.
 
bullet All medications must be stored in the health office.
 
bullet Communication with your child’s school nurse regarding medications, illness/injury, and other pertinent issues that could affect your child’s day. at school is very important.
   
  Health Service Reminders
  The use of  tobacco products within all school facilities, on school grounds, or on school buses and vans by any individual is strictly prohibited (Educational Reform Act of 1993

In order to minimize latex exposure, students and school personnel are asked to use latex-free products.

  Health Advisory Council
  The purpose of this committee is to promote health in the schools. The focus of the Health Advisory Council is to promote health education opportunities, to facilitate healthy choices, and to link the schools with community resources. The Heath Advisory Council is diverse with representation from the schools and the community.

Meetings are held on a quarterly basis.

for environmental, saftey, and health issues.
