Overview
Working as a substitute teacher is a
great way to sharpen your teaching
skills while getting to know our
schools as well as the principals
and teachers in our district.
Substitute teaching can lead to
professional teaching positions, if
you hold a valid Massachusetts
educator license.
Eligibility
All new candidates interested in
substitute teaching in the Hanover
Schools must meet the following
requirements:
- Must possess an undergraduate
college/university degree or
working toward an undergraduate
degree;
- Successfully complete a
screening interview with the
Director of Curriculum,
Instruction and Personnel; and
- Pass a Criminal Record Check.

Application Process
Step 1. Apply to become a
Substitute Teacher
Candidates should submit a complete
application, college transcripts,
two letters of recommendation, and a
valid Massachusetts Educators
License, if applicable.
Step 2. The Personnel Office
will call you to schedule a
screening interview.
After you submit a complete
application, the Personnel Office
will review the application and
contact those candidates who meet
the specific needs of the school
district. During the screening
interview, candidates are asked
general questions about substitute
teaching and real-life classroom
scenarios.
Step 3. Upon successful
completion of Steps 1 and 2,
eligible applicants will be directed
by the Business Office to complete
the hiring process.
If you are recommended by the
Personnel Office to become a
Substitute Teacher in the Hanover
Schools, the Business Manager will
send you an Acknowledgement Letter.
Bring this letter along with your
birth certificate and driver’s
license to the Treasurer’s Office.
You should not go to the Treasure’s
office without an Acknowledgement
Letter from the Business Manager.
Once the representative from the
Treasurer’s Office signs off on your
Acknowledgement Letter, please
return the signed letter to the
Administrative Office at Salmond
School.
Step 4: Placement on the Per
Diem Substitute Call List:
You will be sent a Hanover
Substitute letter from the Director
of Curriculum, Instruction and
Personnel, and then your name will
be included on our substitute list.

If I
have been an active substitute
teacher during the last year for
Hanover Schools, do I need to do
anything differently?
If you are a current
substitute teacher, you do not need
to re-apply. All substitutes are
mailed a form over the summer to
confirm their placement on the
substitute list for the next school
year. If you wish to remain on the
list, it is necessary to return the
completed form.

If I
have been a substitute teacher in
the Hanover Schools previously but
have not been active during the past
year, do I need to re-apply?
Yes, substitute teachers
who have not been active (e.g. have
been taken off our Substitute Caller
List) will be removed from our
computer records. If you have not
been active for one academic year,
you will need to re-apply following
the steps described above.

If I am
a retired teacher in the Hanover
Schools do I need to apply?
Yes. You should submit a letter
requesting to work as a substitute.

How do
I apply for a Long Term Substitute
position?
Long-Term Substitute
positions are needed when teachers
are absent for an extended period of
time. These positions are
advertised by the school principals
in specific teaching areas.
Application requirements for long
term positions are similar to
teaching positions. The hiring
principal will review your
background and qualifications and
will contact you for an interview if
an appropriate match is identified.

What if
I would like to change information
regarding my availability for
substituting?
Any changes in your
substitute status including your
availability, grade level, school
location should be made through the
Personnel Office. If you would like
to be removed from our list please
contact the Director of Curriculum,
Instruction and Personnel at
781-878-0786.
