English Language Learners |
| |
The family of every registering student is given a Home Language Survey to complete. The principal must notify the Director of Pupil Personnel of any student whose first language is other than English. This student will be assessed using a MELA-O and a Team of professionals, chaired by the guidance counselor and or school psychologists will determine whether this student is eligible for English Language Services. Any student identified as an English Language Learner (ELL) is not automatically eligible for special education and/or related services. The Hanover Public Schools will conduct all communication to a family whose first language is other than English in the primary language of the home. |

Home & Hospital Instruction |
| |
Upon receipt of a Physician’s Statement for Temporary Home or Hospital Education form (28R/3) verifying that any student enrolled in a public school or placed by the public school in a private setting must remain at home or in a hospital on a day or overnight basis, or any combination of both, for medical reasons and for a period of not less than fourteen school days in any school year, the principal arranges for provision of educational services in the home or hospital. Such services are provided with sufficient frequency to allow the student to continue his or her educational program, as long as such services do not interfere with the medical needs of the student. The principal coordinates such services with the Hanover Public Schools Director of Pupil Personnel Services for the eligible student. |

Child Find |
| |
“Child find” refers to the process of locating, identifying, and evaluating children with disabilities to ensure that they receive services to which they are entitled. Children and youth, ages birth to 21, living in the Hanover Public School District, who are suspected of having a disability, may be referred for a possible evaluation to determine if they are eligible for special education services. The Hanover Public Schools will hold a screening for any 3 and 4 year old residing in the Town of Hanover who may have difficulties that substantially interfere with learning or present with developmental concerns. We are required by state and federal law to provide a special education program if the learning capacity for any three and four year old student is “significantly limited, impaired, or delayed and is exhibited by difficulties in one or more of the following areas: receptive and/or expressive language; cognitive abilities; physical functioning; social, emotional, or adaptive functioning; and/or self-help skills”. Parents, who are concerned about their child’s development, may contact their district school to request a screening or an evaluation as early as two years and nine months old. Screening is free to all residents in the Town of Hanover and is highly recommended for children who may have special education needs. If your child is three or four years old and requires Special Education Services, he/she can be screened for services now.

Early Education and Care / Integrated Preschool |
| |
What is the Integrated Preschool Program?
The Integrated Preschool Program follows a collaborative model, in which the special education teacher, classroom assistant, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and behavioral therapist work closely together as a team to foster and promote your child’s developmental skills. This program is designed for children aged three to five years old with identified special needs as typically developing peers.
How do I refer my child for the preschool program?
A child is typically referred to the program through Early Intervention, a physician, and/or parent concerns. A child initially undergoes a screening process, which is set up through the special education coordinator at each elementary school. The screenings are scheduled on a monthly basis and are performed by members of the preschool team. Results of the screening may indicate further assessment is needed. If so, the child will be evaluated in the areas of concern.
What is the parent’s role?
|
| |
- Recognize your child’s area of need which may interfere with their daily living skills
- Promote carry-over of skills by participating in home programs
- Keep open lines of communication with Team members
- Be an active participant in your child’s Team meetings
