Fifth grade students at Hanover Middle School recently celebrated their graduation from the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program on April 15, 2009. This program is sponsored by the Hanover Police Department.
Officer Mike McKeever goes to Hanover Middle School and takes command over each fifth grade class for a total of ten sessions. The students listen, discuss and learn about problems that face youth today, including drugs and alcohol, as well as how to prepare and handle these situations.
At the end of the program, students celebrate with a graduation. Students write an essay summarizing what the program has meant to them and then submit it to Officer Mike. He chooses two winners from each class who are invited to read at the ceremony.
In collaboration with Paula McMahon, the music teacher, students learn the DARE song emphasizing the key parts of the program.
Officer Mike is loved by all students and certainly makes a strong impression on each student. The students are lucky to have him in their lives!
