Library Philosophy

The mission of the Hanover Schools Library program is to bring information literacy and reading competencies to all students with the goal of helping them to become independent, life-long learners who are productive members of an ever-changing global community. To that end, library teachers collaborate with administrators and faculty to plan and implement instructional activities that introduce and reinforce the competencies needed for literature appreciation and for information retrieval and use.

Circulating Materials

Cartoon graphic of open blank bookWhen a material is needed for a longer period of time, students and faculty may renew the material by returning them to the library and requesting a renewal. If a material is not returned, the patron is responsible to pay the replacement cost of the material.

The staff at Cedar School Library strives to maintain current selections of print materials and up-to-date personal choice reading and curriculum support materials. Collection development is an ongoing process at the library media center. Teacher input is highly valued during this process; teachers are asked to present their recommendations for new library materials to the library staff.

Library Membership

The Cedar Elementary School Library Media Center is a member of the American Library Association, the Massachusetts Library Association and the Southeast Massachusetts Regional Library System.

Parent/Guardian Opt-Out Procedure for Library Materials, K-12

Library Materials Opt-Out

While the Hanover Public Schools Library Media Centers strive to provide developmentally appropriate, educational, and enriching resources for all students, parent(s)/guardian(s) may exercise their rights to restrict library materials checked out by their children in grades K-12. To restrict certain titles from circulation to their children, parent(s)/guardian(s) must complete the School Library Materials Opt-Out Process. This allows parent(s)/guardian(s) to select specific library titles they do not want their child to check out, or to bar their student from checking out any materials. Each school’s administration will maintain a file of “opt-outs.” It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to complete, modify, and/or update the opt-out form for their child.

Reconsideration of Library Materials

Hanover Public Schools has a policy regarding the reconsideration of library materials. Please review the Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials and submit it to your building principal. View the School Committee Policy IJL-R, Procedures for Reconsideration of Library Materials for policy information.
