Important Storm Information and DESE Update 10/26/21

Hanover H

October Nor'easter Information

We are expecting a significant rain and wind event to impact our area overnight.  Attached is the latest report from the National Weather Service with anticipated wind speeds and rainfall totals.  As you know, Hanover is very susceptible to power outages, and the predicted wind conditions of this storm require that we make plans to respond if necessary. We have been meeting with Hanover Public Safety and DPW officials throughout the day, and we will remain in contact overnight to make determinations about opening school safely tomorrow morning.

No decisions have been made at this time, and we hope for business as usual if possible.  However, if there are power outages at our schools, blocked roadways, and downed wires, or widespread power outages around town, then school closures may be necessary.  We will make every effort to inform families and staff by 6:00 AM if any closures or delays are required, and we will provide that information via phone call, e-mail, our website, and our social media platforms.  Virtual learning will not be an option if schools are closed tomorrow.  Please stay safe and stay tuned.

DESE Update

Earlier this afternoon, DESE Commissioner Riley announced that he is extending the mask mandate until January 15, 2022.  We fully understand that this is a very serious issue for our students, staff, and families. It has created an incredibly challenging debate for our entire district.  The School Committee continues to actively advocate to DESE for local control over these decisions.  We will keep you updated when more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Matt Ferron
Superintendent
