Talking to Children About Traumatic Events 5/25/22

Hanover H

This morning, we share with you the horror and disbelief in response to yesterday’s events in Uvalde, Texas. There are no words that can adequately provide comfort in a time of such tragedy. We want you to know that we are doing everything we can to provide a school environment that is as physically and emotionally safe as possible for your children.

As Superintendent Ferron mentioned in his email yesterday, we are here to support you and your children in any way that we can. We know that explaining events like this to a child can be very difficult. We recommend shielding younger children from media coverage as they are simply not developmentally ready to process such information.

This resource guide, Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teacherscan help you to navigate the topic of school violence should it arise.

Please visit Hanover Public Schools Mental Health and Wellness for additional area referrals and resources if needed.

If you or your child is in need of support, please contact any one of our mental health counselors.

Sincerely,

Dr. Susan Egan
Clinical Director/School Psychologist
