Hanover High School Guidance News 3/23/20

We hope all of you are doing well and staying safe during this unique and unusual time. The guidance department wanted to reach out regarding a few items to help calm some anxieties around college admissions, standardized testing, and course registration.

College Admissions

As you may be aware, many and most colleges have cancelled their accepted-student events, college tours, and information sessions due to the coronavirus. This may pose a concern as May 1st, or "National Deposit Day" is just around the corner and students need to make decisions on where they will attend college next year. In an effort to help, the link below provides information on what colleges are open for tours, who has moved their "deposit day," and who to contact with questions you may have: https://www.nacacnet.org/college-admission-status-coronavirus

In addition, please see the links below to access virtual college tours. Virtual college tours are a great way for students to see a college campus without having to leave the home:

Scholarships

The Class of 2020 Local Scholarship information is available to all seniors. The Scholarship Guide, which provides details on every scholarship that is offered, is located at the link below. All scholarship applications are located in Naviance and instructions on how to apply are posted in the Class of 2020 Google Classroom page.

SAT Testing

Due to the coronavirus, the College Board has canceled the May SAT Test Administration. Students who were not able to take the March SAT, and have registered for the May SAT will be provided refunds from College Board. They have not yet cancelled the June SAT. For the full statement by College Board, please see the link below.

The cancellation of the May test administration may cause some anxiety for those who are concerned about how this will impact applying to college in the fall. Because this is an unprecedented event, we will need to wait for information from College Board and from colleges on the impact on future applicants, if any. There are other test dates available, if a student is interested in registering for those dates (link below).

And finally, this is a great opportunity to practice the SAT! Students can utilize Khan Academy and practice tests on College Board (link below)

Course Registration

Juniors and sophomores are able to register for courses for the 2020-2021 school year through their student accounts in Aspen. Beginning Monday, March 23rd, current freshmen will be able to begin choosing their classes. The portal closes for all current high school students on March 30th, so please make sure to log in and enter courses before this date. The 8th grade will begin selecting courses on March 30, 2020. For your reference, we have included the HHS Program of Studies:  We’ll be sending further information to current 8th graders later this week.

Thank you,

HHS Guidance Department
