Hanover High School Opening Day Information 9/2/22

I am hopeful that our Hawk Nation students and families will be enjoying your last long weekend before the Opening of the 2022-2023 school year!

The staff of HHS has spent the last two days preparing for the new school year and I can confidently state that they are enthusiastic and energized for Opening Day on Tuesday, September 6th! Please remember that it will be a busy day on campus, as it is also Election Day, and you will see several members of the Hanover Police Department directing traffic that morning and afternoon.

Dismissal and Pick-up

Please review the following notice from our School Resource Officer John Voelkel:

Welcome Back HHS Students and Families. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our DISMISSAL/PICK-UP procedure here at HHS.

  • No access to the Main Driveway between 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm.
  • The main Driveway will open for pickups at 2:30 pm.
  • Do not idle/wait/queue on Cedar Street prior to 2:30 pm.
  • Be considerate of neighbors. Do not park in, or block, their driveways.
  • If you need to dismiss a student between 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm, use Cedar Drive Entrance.
  • When entering the main driveway, utilize both lanes of traffic and follow the traffic pattern.
  • Pull as far forward as possible when picking up your student.
  • Do not utilize the rear of the school for pickup. This area is designated for school van pick-ups.
  • Student Drivers in Student Lot will exit right out of Student Lot and Right onto Cedar Drive.

The Hanover Police Department will be monitoring the area during dismissal at different times throughout the school year. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Reminders

HHS has a service dog who often follows a student throughout the course of a school day. Respectfully, we please ask that all students and staff follow our service dog protocols, including:

  • The dog is not to be touched or petted
  • Do not call the dog by its name
  • Do not try to feed the dog
  • Do not bark or make startling sounds at the dog

Thank you for your understanding!

NEASC Update

Students will be hearing HHS staff speak about NEASC this school year. NEASC stands for New England Association of Schools and Colleges and it is an accreditation process that schools undergo every decade. The HHS NEASC Collaborative Conference Visit is scheduled for December 8th and 9th of this school year, and our HHS staff is currently writing our self-reflection to prepare for the visit. Students and Parent/Caregivers will be asked, in the coming week, to complete a NEASC Survey which will assist us in completing our self-reflection work. Our staff has already taken the survey, it takes about 15 minutes, and is an excellent opportunity for HHS to seek student and family input. Students will be asked to complete the NEASC Student Survey in school, and an email will be sent home to parents with a link for them to complete the NEASC Parent Survey. We thank you for your assistance and participation in our NEASC Accreditation process!

Restrooms

This school year HHS will have two single-occupancy restrooms, and they will be located on the first floor near our Engineering classrooms. One will be for students, and one will be for staff. Signs signifying usage are posted on the respective restroom doors.

Opening Day Class Meetings

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must be in their assigned homerooms by the 7:55 am bell. Seniors, as soon as they enter the building, will report directly to the auditorium for a class meeting. Afterwards, throughout the morning, every grade level will then be individually called to the auditorium to participate in class meetings to go over school policies, procedures, and expectations for the upcoming school year.

Chromebooks

Student laptops have become a vital classroom resource, often used multiple periods a day to access Google Classrooms and work on assignments. It is our expectation that all students have a laptop with them every day, fully charged (please make sure students bring charging cords to school). We encourage students who have their own laptops to bring theirs, and we will work with them on any technical issues that arise. For students who do not have a laptop, we have a limited supply of Chromebooks that can be loaned out for the year. If your student needs a loan, please complete the HHS Request for Chromebook Loan Request form and read and sign the attached contract. Your student should bring the completed contract to the library on September 5th-6th to receive his or her device. Please know that there will be no daily loans of Chromebooks from the Library or teacher pods if students forget to bring or charge their own device.

ALICE Update

Hanover Public Schools recently reviewed our ALICE safety and security training with all of our staff during our preparations for the new school year, to that effect, please know that we will be conducting an HHS ALICE drill with students sometime during the week of September 12, 2022. This training will serve to continue our primary goal of securing our schools.

Class Schedules

Updated class schedules will be re-published to Aspen this weekend. Please ask your student to review their schedule as a few changes have been made. To schedule an appointment with their guidance counselor, students should see Mrs. Doherty in the guidance office or email her at bdoherty@hanoverschools.org.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this letter, Hawk Nation is ready to welcome our students back into our classrooms!  We are eagerly anticipating Opening Day with a high level of energy and enthusiasm which we know will carry all of us through the entire school year!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on September 6th!
