Hanover High School Opening Day Information and Updates 8/17/22

Welcome to Hawk Nation for the 2022-2023 school year! I am Matthew Mattos, and I am looking forward to my 2nd year as Principal at Hanover High School. The faculty and staff of HHS are excited about your family’s involvement in all aspects of our school community this year. Academic achievement continues to be our number one priority. We are committed to instruction and student learning for all, with the ultimate goal of a successful post-graduation plan for every child. Our expectation is that all students will align themselves with our HHS Mission Statement, Core Values and Beliefs, and Learning Expectations.

In addition to high expectations for elevated academic achievement, I have a personal affinity for extracurricular activities. I will be encouraging every student at HHS to be connected to our school through membership in our extracurricular offerings, as I truly believe “A Connected Student is a Better Student.” We will encourage all students to be a part of our academic support programs, clubs, sports, and organizations. We truly feel that a student who participates in all that HHS has to offer will become an integral part of the enthusiastic, positive and respectful climate that exists at Hanover High School.

As we begin the new school year, there are several items of interest. Please note the following important dates on your calendar. We have attached a 2022-2023 Hanover Public Schools Calendar for your review. Also, please check the HHS Athletics website for the latest HHS Athletics information and calendar.

Student Council Luncheon

Thursday, August 25th from 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm

Student Council officers and members are invited to attend a pizza luncheon with HHS Administration.  These students will have lunch and help with setting up the Freshmen Orientation.  Two to three StuCo members will be assigned to every Freshmen homeroom and serve as Tour Guides.

Freshman Orientation

Thursday, August 25th from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Freshman Orientation will begin in the Auditorium at 1:00 pm. During this assembly, members of the HHS Administration will introduce themselves and cover some general school policies and freshmen will hear directly from some Student Council leaders about being a part of Hawk Nation!  Following the presentation in the auditorium, all freshmen will then be assigned to their homerooms for a guided tour of the building by members of the Student Council.

First Day of School

Tuesday, September 6th. Please be in school every day before 7:55 am!

This year, students are beginning school on Tuesday, September 6th. HHS hours are from 7:55 am to 2:30 pm. Early Release day hours are from 7:55 am to 12:30 pm.

On the 1st day of school, students will be given various forms to be brought home, filled out and signed by their parent/guardian and the student. It is strongly encouraged to have your child return these forms the next day in homeroom so that the Main Office will have the most accurate and current family information. Please know that the 1st day of school is also Election Day, so there will be HPD Officers on campus helping to direct traffic.

Class Meetings

Tuesday, September 6th

Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors must be in their assigned homerooms by the 7:55 am bell.  Seniors, as soon as they enter the building, will report directly to the Auditorium for a Class Meeting. Afterward, throughout the morning, every grade level will then be individually called to the Auditorium to participate in Class Meetings to go over school policies, procedures, and expectations for the upcoming school year.

Picture Day

Wednesday, September 7th
Wednesday, September 7th is Picture Day. All students should dress nicely, and all students are expected to get their photos taken. They will systematically be called down to the gym for these pictures. Please note, that not only are these photos used for the Yearbook but they will also be utilized for their student ID card.

Curriculum and Expectations Night

Thursday, September 29th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Curriculum and Expectations Night will begin promptly at 6:00 pm and end at 8:00 pm. There will be a short presentation by the HHS Administration at 6:00 pm in the Auditorium.  Parents will then follow their child’s “A” Day schedule beginning at 6:20 pm.  Student Council students will be on hand to assist with directions.

SAT Registration and PSATs Information

The registration deadline for the October 1st SAT is September 2nd.  The registration deadline for the November 5th SAT is October 7th. Students may register for the SATs by going to www.collegeboard.org.  The PSATs will be administered at Hanover High School for all sophomores and juniors on Wednesday, October 12th during the school day.  Further information will follow.

Chromebooks

Student laptops have become a vital classroom resource, often used multiple periods a day to access Google Classrooms and work on assignments. It is our expectation that all students have a laptop with them every day, fully charged (please make sure students bring charging cords to school). We encourage students who have their own laptops to bring theirs, and we will work with them on any technical issues that arise. For students who do not have a laptop, we have a limited supply of Chromebooks that can be loaned out for the year. If your student needs a loan, please complete the request form by August 24th. Please know that there will be no daily loans of Chromebooks from the Library or teacher pods if students forget to bring or charge their own device.

Student Handbook

Students are responsible to review and be aware of all information in the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct 2022 – 2023. Before the first day of school, I will be sending a link to the Hanover High School Code of Conduct for you to carefully review with your child. On the first day of school, students will be asked to sign a sheet acknowledging review of the Code of Conduct. Please take time to review this important information with your child.

Student Parking

Students will need to fill out the HHS Parking Registration Form and submit it to the Dean of Students on August 22nd - 24th between 7:00 am and 2:00 pm. Students must present their license and car registration at that time to receive a parking tag. If a student is unable to come during these times, they may bring in a registration form during the first week of school and complete the process. Please note that there is no lottery this year, students with a parking tag can park in any parking space in the student parking lot, first come, first serve.

Remember driving to school is a privilege, not a right. Therefore, please drive safely and obey the rules and regulations listed below:

  • Students must park in a parking space. Students may not park in the Faculty parking lot located in the back of the school building or in the maintenance lot.
  • Students must operate a motorized vehicle in a safe manner on school property. A speed limit of 5 miles per hour will be enforced on school grounds.
  • Students must not be in the parking lots, or in, on, or around an automobile during school hours without permission from the Principal, Assistant Principal, or Dean of Students.
  • Students are subject to Police ticketing for illegal parking (or for parking in the visitor spots).

Violations of these policies can result in the loss of parking privileges and disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Student Handbook.

We look forward to the start of this school year and working cooperatively with the families of our students to assist us with developing highly successful high school graduates!

On behalf of our staff, I thank you for your continued support of Hanover High School.

Welcome Back to Hawk Nation!

Very truly yours,]

Matthew Mattos
Principal
