Senior Plans 4/29/20

April 29, 2020

As I’m sitting here in my office, all I can think about is the Class of 2020.  I’m currently scheduling a series of celebratory events for seniors for the month of May and beyond.  I’ve received a tremendous amount of suggestions and support from several people over these past few weeks, and all of it has been incredibly helpful in putting together a plan for seniors moving forward.  I’ll be sending out “the official” schedule of events early next week.  So, I want to thank all of you whose ideas and suggestions contributed to our finalized plan for seniors.  Thank you!

In the meantime, I want to encourage all of our 2020 graduates to stay invested, academically and socially – in the safest of ways, of course.  To that end, I want to make clear that given the changes to senior exams, senior week, and other year-end activities, there is no definitive or “official” last day of classes for seniors in the month of May.  Advanced Placement exams, for instance, extend through May 22nd, and students are expected to continue in these courses as they’ve done all year until the exam is taken and/or the digital portfolio is submitted.  Virtual High School lasts through May 12th for students enrolled in these courses.  Overall, I strongly encourage all seniors to stay connected with classes and with teachers well into May.

In an earlier message, I spotlighted May 1st as an opportunity to provide some closure for seniors in terms of assignments and assessments associated with the credit/no credit component of our home-learning “grading” policy.  May 1st is not the last day of classes for seniors; rather, it’s simply a benchmark date to ensure credit for most courses, to provide some relief in most courses in that performance will not be associated with credit beyond that date, and to transition into enrichment work in most courses.

We have a lot planned for you in May, so please stay invested!  As mentioned, I’ll send out our finalized senior calendar early next week.

That’s it for now.  Be warm.  Be safe.
