Work Permits for All Students Residing in the Town of Hanover

All students between the ages of 14 to 18 are required to obtain a work permit to be employed in Massachusetts. Work permits are issued at Hanover High School, Hanover Middle School, and at the Salmond School Central Office.

Work Permit Requirements

Please follow these Important steps before requesting a permit from the school department. Youth applicants must have a promise of employment before requesting a permit from the schools. 

  1. Download and print the work permit application. Hard copies of the application are also available at each location.  
  2. Obtain a job offer. The employer must complete page 1 of the application.
  3. Physician's signature of Certified of Health on page 2 of the application (if 14 or 15 years old).
  4. Parents/guardians must fill out section 2 on page 2 of the application.
  5. Proof completed 6th grade (for out-of-district students who live in Hanover).
  6. Proof of age (passport, birth certificate, permit, or license).
  7. Proof of residency (for out-of-district students who live in Hanover).
  8. Applicants must sign in front of the permit issuer.

Important information regarding requesting a work permit from the schools. 

  • Work permits are required until the applicant's 18th birthday
  • A new work permit is required with each job change, change of duties, and/or location.

Work Permit Process

  • View and download the application for 14-17 year-old workers.
  • Follow the instructions on the application to complete the form.
    • The Promise of Employment must be completed and signed by the employer before the work permit can be issued.
    • Students must be present to obtain a work permit.
  • Bring the completed application and proof of age (birth certificate, passport, or immigration record) as indicated in the application packet.
  • Hanover High School, Hanover Middle School, or District Administration (or designee) will review the application and issue the student an employment permit. The student will provide the employment permit to their employer.
  • The work permit is valid as long as the student is employed in the same job. If the student changes jobs or employers, a new work permit is required.

Hours: Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm (Depending on Staff Availability).

Please note: Work permits cannot always be done on demand. It may take 1-3 business days to process your application. Students may request a work permit during school hours as long as they have all the required documentation and signatures.
