We are pleased to announce that Hanover Public Schools will be using a new standards-based report card in grades K-4, beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. This new report card is an exciting step for our schools, as we work towards ensuring that all students are successfully meeting grade-level standards. In the spring we sent home samples and offered informational seminars, explaining the rationale behind our new standards-based report card. In the fall of 2012, these sessions will be offered again, to help parents deal with questions or concerns about the new reporting process. Teachers and principals will also discuss the report card with you at parent-teacher conferences.
The standards listed describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subject areas. The new report cards have been designed to give you more and better information about how your child is progressing. In addition, the literacy and math standards are aligned to the new ELA and math common core standards that have been adopted by Massachusetts and many other states in the U.S.
On the report card, you will learn whether or not your child's performance is advanced for the standard, meets the standard, is at a beginning level, or does not meet any criteria for the reporting period for each standard listed. The report card will also provide information on behaviors that support learning.
We think this new report card is going to be helpful in multiple ways. First, it will ensure that there is more consistency among expectations from teacher to teacher. Second, it will help teachers and students focus on the standards from the very beginning of the year, giving students a chance to get help sooner if they are not making adequate progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you will learn exactly how your students are doing based upon the standards. You'll learn which big ideas and concepts your children have learned and what they need to work on to ensure they are ready for the next grade level.
Sample report cards and a PowerPoint presentation are currently available on our school district website to help you understand the new look of Hanover Public Schools' standards-based report cards. To review the report cards, PowerPoint and standards per grade level, click on the links below.
