Cedar School News and Updates 10/26/22

Share our Story

This section of the memo is intended to share our story at Cedar. We invite parents, guardians, and caregivers to share their stories too, by communicating with us and one another.

Students had the opportunity last week to learn about what makes others unique and special in their own way. They enjoyed a wonderful presentation from our guest presenter, Ryan Haack, and then participated in a wide variety of activities to celebrate how being different is awesome!

We continue to keep the health and safety of our students at the forefront of our work. Recently, students participated in a bus evacuation drill with the support of our Hanover Police Department and the bus transportation company. It was a tremendous success!

Halloween is right around the corner, which has everyone excited about the annual Cedar Halloween Parade. On Monday, October 31, 2022, students have the option of wearing a costume to school. Students will walk through the building as a class before transitioning outside to the high school track, if weather permits. Family members are invited to stand on the outside of the fence or sit on the bleachers and observe the parade. The parade will begin at 9:00 am. Please know that if it’s raining on Monday morning, we will alert families of the canceled event. If you decide to send your child to school with a costume, the child should arrive at school wearing the costume, and not have to worry about changing during the day. Masks and toy weapons should not be brought to school.

We continue to reinforce language with students which includes being safe, being kind, and following the plan. Students continue to be recognized over the morning announcements for demonstrating Super Friend expectations while at school. Please know that all parents and guardians are invited to a parent workshop in November focused on further supporting your child’s social-emotional skills. View the Parent Workshop flyer (also attached).

Important Cedar Information

The Pumpkin Stroll will take place tomorrow night at Cedar. Families who decide to bring a Jack-O’-Lantern to the event should drop it off behind the Cedar building between 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm. There will be cones marking where to position the pumpkins. I ask that families please adhere to the times listed on the chart below in order to reduce the overall congestion in the school parking lot. Please know that we will be collecting canned goods for the Hanover Food Pantry during this event. Also, please consider bringing a flashlight tomorrow night!

Block

Time

Description

Sensory Friendly Block

5:30-6:00

This block of time is designed to be less sensory-stimulating and overwhelming. Music will be turned off and there should still be daylight during this time slot. Students will be able to view the pumpkins on display and visit the Book Fair. This block of time is open to any student.

Preschool/Kindergarten

6:15-7:00

All preschool and kindergarten students are invited to view the pumpkins on display and visit the Book Fair.

First-Grade

7:15-8:00

All first-grade students are invited to view the pumpkins on display and visit the Book Fair.

If your child missed an opportunity to purchase a book during their literacy special this week, this is a reminder that the Book Fair will also be conducted on the evening of the Pumpkin Stroll.  Families can visit the Book Fair in the gymnasium after they have viewed the pumpkins. Additionally, families can purchase books online by clicking on the “shop now” button on the Scholastic Online Book Fair.

We are looking for a few additional volunteers to help break down the Book Fair tomorrow night following the Pumpkin Stroll. Please contact Michelle Hill, at mes510@yahoo.com, if you are able to help with this request. The breakdown of the event should take approximately 45 minutes.

Mrs. Thornton has been working hard with our Kindergarten and First-Grade students preparing them for the Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 10th. If you are a Veteran or have a Veteran in your family who would like to attend the assembly, please contact Kristen Gokey in the main office, at kgokey@hanoverschools.org. Again, this event is open to Veterans and their families.
