Center School Bees 10/3/23

Today at recess, we saw an increase in bees in and around our playground areas. While we always have bees buzzing around, today there was a large amount that seemed drawn to our trash bins in large numbers. The DPW was quick to respond and has been working all afternoon to remove the trash barrels and isolate the source(s) of where the bees are coming from at Center School. Our second graders were the first ones outside this morning, followed by third grade, and lastly, fourth grade. By the time the fourth grade was coming in, many bees were circling the area, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc. Students were definitely excited by the bees, as any of us would be, and that excitement led to some screams, some tears, and some fear. We have addressed student concerns individually but wanted you to be aware.

The large playground and field seemed much improved this afternoon and we are closely monitoring the small playground. The DPW continues to work on this issue. Our FACE program is aware and are planning outside activity carefully. We will assess the playgrounds in the morning and work with the DPW to determine if outdoor recess is safe for large grade-level groups.

Moving forward, at least until the cold settles in and the bees have moved on, we will bring trash bags out at each recess to collect them and bring them in with us at the end of recess.

Thank you,

Mrs. DeGrenier
