Center School Home Learning Plan 5/2/20

It was so wonderful to see the sun these past two days and get some time outside!  It gave an air of hope after a long time of rainy days and indoor quarantining!  My message this week is a bit longer, so thank you in advance for taking the time to read through the news!

It has been a week since the Governor’s announcement about school remaining closed for the rest of the school year.  During the past week we received additional guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regarding phase 3 of the extended school closure. Included in this guidance were pre-requisite standards for each grade.  These pre-requisite standards were selected as the ‘power standards or essential standards’ for the grade and would ensure that each student was prepared to move forward.  I have attached a copy of the pre-requisite standards for grades 2-4 so that you can see what is expected for your child.  Some of the standards were covered prior to the closure in March, while others will be addressed between now and June 19th.

In addition to the pre-requisite standards, the most recent guidance included two other key points: the importance of ensuring that all students remain engaged their remote learning plans and streamlining communication for families as much as possible. As we looked at our communication plan we determined there were a few areas we could do better.  We will include as many updates as possible in our school email sent out on Sundays.  In addition, classroom teachers will send the home learning plan and will include modifications/accommodations for students on IEPs from their special education teacher. Whenever possible all items will be posted to the Google Classroom for your  child and our Center School Home Learning Website will remain up to date with all the resources, links, and extensions that you need during this time.

All staff members have worked this week on making their Zoom Sessions pre-scheduled and recurring for class, small group, and individual sessions.  It is helpful if you save these to your Google or internet calendar so you have the link to the session handy.

A Word from Mrs. Madden and Gianna

Mrs. Madden and Gianna's social/emotional lesson is on growth mindset this week.  Growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through hard work and perseverance and that mistakes and challenges are opportunities to learn and make our brains stronger!  All of the video lessons, along with several related activities, can be found on our remote learning website under the Social/Emotional tab (Weekly Lessons).

Special Education

IEP accommodations and/or modifications for the week are posted in your child's google classroom and this link to the special education webpage will take you to all of our graphic organizers, reference sheets, resources, websites, and learning activities. You can also reach pages for speech/language, multi-sensory reading, Occupational/Physical Therapy, STARS. Special Education Home Learning

Specialists Update

This week we are pleased to share with you that Mr. Lindsey is now the proud Dad of his second son, Tommy, who joined the Lindsey family earlier in the week.  Mr. Lindsey will be on paternity leave for this week.  If you have any questions about music lessons or the music webpage, please reach out to Mr. Wilson (rwilson@hanoverschools.org) and he would be happy to help you!

Our first virtual art show will go live this week and we hope that you will take a minute to visit the Art webpage and see all of the amazing art work that Mrs. Cass and our Grade 3 Students worked so hard on during the school year.  We had planned this art show for March and are delighted to bring it to you virtually.  In the weeks ahead we will be bringing you the artwork of our second and fourth grade students as well. Enjoy!

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week marks the celebration of Teacher Appreciation.  If we were together we would mark the occasion with a theme or some kind of celebratory moments to show our appreciation.  This year, please take a minute to think of a current or past teacher who has made difference in your lifetime and share it with your child. These stories are ones that share our experiences and show the impact teachers have on us as life-long learners. Someday, our children will grow up and reflect on this time of being separated from school, their teachers, and having to learn in a virtual world.  It is our hope that they will remember a teacher and a time that made a difference in their lives.  #ThankATeacher

Please be safe and be well,

Mrs. DeGrenier
