Other Announcements

If you missed this important announcement on Friday afternoon from the school committee, please read the following message:

Dear HPS Families, Staff, and Community,

Over the past month, our School Committee and administrators have been navigating the difficult process of closing a significant budget gap resulting from the projected reduction to Chapter 70 state aid for education arising from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Our goal from the beginning was to balance the school budget with the least possible impact to students, our staff, and the resources we need for excellent instruction.  In order to do that, we have worked diligently with town officials to create a strategy that is both good for the schools and the town while being mindful that the fiscal impact of the pandemic may extend into Fiscal Year 2022 and beyond.

We are grateful for the decision that the Advisory Committee made on Wednesday night to recommend to Town Meeting allocating more free cash to help narrow the gap considerably.  While we will still be operating at a reduced budget, we believe that this budget represents a fiscally responsible approach.  The proposed budget is one that we can work with and it will minimize the need for staff reductions while having the least impact to student achievement.  We will continue to update our community in the weeks ahead as we learn more about the Department of Education's guidelines for a safe opening in September.

Sincerely,

Leah Miller
Chairperson, Hanover School Committee
