Center School News 8/16/20

August 16, 2020

We continue to work on our plans for returning to school in September.  The upcoming week will be full of informational meetings and a need for you to respond to the plan you are choosing for your child (ren) for returning to school via link being sent directly to you.  We appreciate your support in responding as soon as possible so that we can get to the important work of identifying cohorts and sending out placement and schedule information to you as soon as possible.  A direct link will be sent to parents for making selections.   I have included a list of the frequently asked questions and we will cover more tomorrow evening.

I have included the dates and times for the virtual meetings this week.  If you have a child in another school, you will get a Zoom invite to the school meeting from the principal. I sent the Center School invite in a separate email for easy access to the link:

  • Monday 8/17, 3:00 PM, School Committee
  • Tuesday 8/18, 6:30 PM, Center School Parent Meeting
  • Tuesday 8/18, 7:30PM , HMS Parent Meeting

Message from Mrs. Madden and Gianna

As we get closer to the start of school, it is not only important to prepare and support our children, but as parents in a new and challenging situation we could use a little help too!  Below you will find a Back to School Care Package with ideas, tips, and printables for both you and your children on various topics, including how to separate "teacher you" and "parent you", creative ways to connect with others, and helping kids get along while learning from home.  Please take the time to check out the care package, you will find valuable information that will make the transition back to learning easier and more peaceful for you and your family.

Another way to make the transition go smoother is to have your child practice wearing a mask before school starts.  If you haven't already, explain to your child why we wear masks and the proper way to wear them (Masked Heroes).  Make wearing a mask fun by letting kids pick their own masks, using stuffed animals to demonstrate, taking silly selfies with a mask on, or decorating coloring pages by adding face masks to characters.  You can also try face-timing with family or friends while wearing masks (especially someone your child might look up to), looking in a mirror and making different faces with the mask on and off, or talking with the mask on using a louder or softer voice and noticing how the sound changes.  Practice by starting with shorter periods of time while doing a fun activity (the length of a favorite song or a board game) and give a small reward if needed as your child keeps the mask on for longer periods of time.  Finally, and most importantly, be a role model.  Having a positive attitude about wearing a mask and doing so on a regular basis will impact how willing your child will be to wear a mask.
