Devices in School

While we are happy for students that they have access to these items and enjoy them, they are causing an unnecessary distraction among students in school. We have made several reminders to students about devices staying at home and, at this time, are asking for your help in ensuring students keep these items at home at home.

We know some families feel it is important for students to have access to a personal device. We are asking students to leave these items at home (cell phones, iPads, apple watches, Gizmos, etc.) and if that is not possible to know that they must be kept off and in their backpacks during the school day, including the bus ride. Students should not email, call, or text from school using a personal device during the school day. If students have a need to communicate with a parent for any reason during the school day, we ask that they tell their teacher, go to the nurse, or ask to use the phone at the office.

I have included the passages from the school handbook that we refer to when talking with students and reminding them of our school rules. Please review these with your child and we will be doing the same at school.

We appreciate your continued support,

Mrs. DeGrenier
Principal

Electronic Devices,

Handbook, Page 15

Unsupervised use of electronic devices is a large source of distraction for the learning environment and has the potential to create a hostile school environment. The use of any electronic device (cell phones, tablets, i-pods, apple watches, Gizmos, etc.) is not permitted during the school day without the permission of an administrator or teacher. There will be learning activities throughout the school year where teachers incorporate and supervise the use of electronic devices. Electronic devices must be turned off when entering the school in the morning and placed in students’ backpacks. No electronic devices can either be visible or be heard during the day. Parents/guardians are reminded that if they have an emergency they can call the front office, and we will contact the student immediately. Students not adhering to the electronic devices expectations will be referred to an administrator and appropriate consequences will be administered. If the offense occurs a second time, the parent/guardian may be required to pick up the device in the office.

Telephone Use

Handbook, Page 17

Students who need to use a phone should ask for permission from the teacher to go to the office at a time that is not disruptive to the class.  If parents/guardians need to contact their student in an emergency, the parent/guardian are asked to contact the office.  The office will contact the student immediately.  The student can call the parent/guardian from the office phone. Cell phones are to be turned off and kept in backpacks during the school day.

Toys/Electronic Devices

Students are asked to keep all toys, including electronic devices, at home unless requested by a teacher to be brought into school for a specific project.
