Center School Summer Update 7/10/25

I hope you are enjoying the first weeks of summer break. They certainly came in hot and put us right in summer mode! Hopefully, students have had some time to break from school routines and work and get in plenty of swimming, bike riding, and all the other fun things they like to do! I will send out school messages during the summer with updates for the coming school year. This will be the last message sent to our outgoing fourth grade families!  We will be on summer hours, and our office will be open on a limited basis. Most weeks, there will be someone in the office Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, should you need to come in or call. If you reach out, please leave a message, and one of us will get back to you as soon as possible.

Assistant Principal Update

We are pleased to announce that we have hired a new assistant principal who began with us on July 1st. Mrs. Christa Monahan is joining our leadership team and we could not be happier. Her experiences in education, both in the classroom and as a specialist, her leadership in the building over the years, along with her dedication and commitment to the students of Hanover, are priceless, and we are looking forward to having her leadership full-time at Center School next year! Congratulations Mrs. Monahan!

Employment Opportunities

We are currently wrapping up our hiring for open positions for the 2025-2026 school year. This includes classroom teachers in each grade to reduce class size, and an instructional technology teacher to fill Mrs. Monahan’s position. In addition, we are looking to fill several tutor positions. Should you know of anyone who may be interested in a tutor position for the next school year, please have them apply on SchoolSpring or email me directly at [email protected]

Center School PTA

A special thank you to Mrs. Harmon for her many years of serving as our PTA representative at Center School. She tirelessly ensured that all events went off without a hitch and enlisted many volunteers to help run events, donate items, and help out where needed. It is because of volunteers like Mrs. Harmon that our school enjoyed so many memorable moments and our students had lots of fun. We will miss you and all the smiles you brought to Center School, but we know you are only a phone call away!  Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Community Support

Each school year has its unique joys and challenges. This year was no exception with large class sizes and limited resources. There were many times when we (the adults) felt the pinch, but our goal was that our students did not and that they had a school year full of learning and fun. Our teaching staff did an exceptional job making this happen and are grateful for everything they did to provide another wonderful year to our students. As we head into next year, we appreciate the support of the community in providing some relief to these challenges and look forward to another great school year ahead! Thank you!

Center School Council

Mrs. Bertrand and Mrs. Palek served on our school council the last two years. As their terms have come to an end, we want to thank them for their work on the council and their strong advocacy and support of our school(s). They were excellent collaborators and brought your voices to the council meetings to ensure that our school continues to grow and achieve our goals. Thank you for your time and perspective over the past two years. We appreciate you and all you brought to the table.

We will be looking for two new School Council members, as well as a community representative to join us next year. Information will go out in September and our meetings are typically held on Wednesdays once every six weeks from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm in the Center School conference room. Please consider joining the Center School Council.

Enjoy Your Summer

I wish you a summer full of sunny days, lots of time spent with family and friends, and time to rest and rejuvenate. The long days and freeness of the season are to be enjoyed! Be safe, have fun, and we’ll see you in September!

Spring Benchmark Assessments

Spring benchmark assessment results for iReady, DIBELS and term three report cards are posted in the Aspen portal. If you have any difficulty accessing your child’s information, please reach out to Ms. Michalak at [email protected], and she will assist you.

Free Books

Beginning the week of July 14th, there will be a table of free children's books out in front of the main entrance at Center School. Please help yourself. These books are previously donated or surplus books that are available from the library, book closets, and classrooms that are no longer being used. If you are in need of a good read or are a teacher who wants to add to your classroom library, you may find a treasure. Stop by and help yourself!

Student Supply Lists

Student Supply Lists

Each year, parents/guardians ask what is needed for students when they return to school in September for school supplies. While the School Committee has voted for a budget that provides general supplies to all students, some of the items listed for your child’s grade level may be purchased for the start of school. We provide you with this list as we know many stores run back-to-back school sales. Please know that all students will have everything they need for school supplies when they enter in September.\

Summer Reading and Math

Summer Learning Site

As summer approaches, we are all looking forward to spending time with family and friends. Our goal is to help our students find the right balance between enjoying vacation and dedicating time to keeping their reading and math skills sharp.

We are providing you with reading and math resources that students can use at home to prepare for the next school year. While these resources are optional, we encourage students to take full advantage and return them in the fall to be recognized for their work well done!

  • Reading log to list titles read

Resources

Students Entering Grades 1-5 Mathematics

You will find a Mathematics Calendar full of fun-filled activities that will strengthen your child’s math skills and promote mathematical reasoning. Working on these activities will prepare your child for a great year in the fall.

In order to create options that motivate students as well as to maintain a strong home-school connection, we have created a Summer Learning page that contains math and reading activities, apps, websites, and grade-specific book choices.  This link is also available on our HPS website.

We hope that amid your summer break, you might also spend some time with your child exploring new books and playing a few fun math games. We encourage you to continue to include reading as an activity that is part of your daily routine.

Have a well-deserved summer break and thank you for your support!
