Hearing and Vision Screening

Vision, hearing, height and weight screenings are conducted during the month of October and until all students have been screened. This can sometimes take us into November.  The screenings are scheduled during PE class time and kids come and go from PE to the health office to participate in the screenings. These screenings are mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health:

  • 105CMR 200.400 “the vision of each student in the public schools to be screened annually through grade 5….the hearing of each student in the public schools to be screened annually through grade 3.”
  • 105CMR 200.500 “the weight and height shall be measured for each student in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. Measurement of weight and height shall shall be recorded and shall be maintained in the student's school health record.”

If a student fails the initial hearing/vision screening, there will be a delay of two to three weeks before re-screening (allowance for colds or other problems).
Parents/guardians of children who fail the initial screening and re-screening will be notified by letter asking for further evaluation with the primary care physician.

A referral indicates there is sufficient deviation in the child's visual or auditory condition to justify a more complete exam by an eye or ear specialist. School
screening tests are not diagnostic in nature. They are not meant to be a substitute for a professional vision or hearing exam.

Children who wear glasses/contact lenses for any reason will wear them during the screening.
