Professional Development
Welcome to the Hanover Public Schools professional development (PD). The overarching goal of PD is to change teacher behaviors so that teacher practice will promote increased student learning.
Types of Professional Development
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has identified a wide range of PD activities that can qualify for Professional Development Points (PDPs), including but not limited to the activities listed below.
Job-Embedded Activities
Ongoing participation in job-embedded activities such as mentoring/coaching, professional learning communities, lesson study, serving as a mentor in a formal district mentoring program, peer coaching, or serving as a cooperating teacher to a pre-service (student) teacher.
Short-Term Activities
Participation in a series of short-term activities in a given topic that equal 10 hours such as a school-based workshop, seminar, book study groups, or professional conference workshop. When teachers complete participation in a workshop that knowledge should be disseminated the teacher’s peers.
School-Based Activity
Participation in a school-based activity such as developing and offering content seminars to teachers, or serving as a member of a visiting team for accreditation.
Long-Term Activities
Participation in long-term activities such as university courses, micro-credential/certification, development of curriculum units, or a K-12 curriculum.
