Hanover High School Guidance Update 1/14/21

Opportunities and Upcoming Events

Now that we are securely advancing through the first month of the new year, I feel there is much to communicate.  That said, I'll deliver the information in manageable messages.  Let's start with a guidance update.

Hanover High School is committed to strengthening the college preparedness of our students and families.  Our objective for this work is for you and your child to be confident and well informed when the time comes to select the college that best meets their academic and career aspirations.  Selecting the right school also requires decision-making around the “right fit’ and financial considerations for all of our graduates.

To support this exciting but challenging process, we are offering again this year a college planning seminar series called, Destination Graduation.  Our HHS Guidance Department developed this opportunity, and they will serve as the “professors” for these valuable courses.

Please see the offerings for students, parents, and families below.

Events and Opportunities for Students During School

Junior College Workshops: Students in the Class of 2022

Counselors are in the process of scheduling college workshops for the junior class for the beginning of February.  During these workshops, counselors will review the college research and admissions process.  Students will receive an email from the guidance department with a date and time for their junior workshop, and information will also be posted on the guidance Google Classroom page.

When: Beginning the first week of February
Where: In-person and Zoom

PSAT/NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT is the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  The PSAT is a great primer for the SAT and even the ACT, but it’s more than just a trial run.  PSAT scores are used to identify National Merit Scholars and award merit scholarships.  More than 3.4 million high school students (mostly juniors and sophomores) take this nationwide, multiple-choice test every year.

When: Tuesday, January 26, 2021
Where: HHS Gymnasium at 8:00 am
Registration: CLOSED. For those students who have registered, test day information and protocols will be sent out before the exam.

PSAT 10

The PSAT 10 is one of four tests in the SAT Suite of Assessments – all of which test students on the knowledge and skills they need for college.  The PSAT 10 is the same as the PSAT/NMSQT in terms of subject matter and difficulty.

When: Wednesday, March 3, 2021
Where: HHS Gymnasium at 8:00 am
Registration: CLOSED. For those students who have registered, test day information and protocols will be sent out before the exam

SAT School Day

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) School Day provides schools, districts, and states a way to offer the SAT to juniors in school, on a weekday, expanding access to a globally recognized college admission test that's accepted at all U.S. colleges.  Over 3.7 million students in over 3,000 districts and 9,000 schools have participated in SAT School Day.  The SAT exam is not mandatory for juniors; rather, it’s offered on a volunteer basis.

When: Wednesday, March 24, 2021
Where: Hanover High School
Registration: Complete the online form no later than January 25, 2021
Cost: $52.00 per student.  If you would like to request a fee waiver, please indicate your request on the registration form.
