Hanover High School Internet Update 11/1/22

As you may have heard from your students at Hanover High School, we have been experiencing some intermittent and ongoing technical difficulties with our Internet access. This has truly been a challenge for our entire school community.

My intent for sending out this notice this morning is the hope that you and your child understand that our teachers and staff are currently doing their very best to navigate through these technical difficulties. You and your child may notice some Google Classroom delays, back-up with the grading of assignments, and the inability of teachers to access student assignments that have already been completed. All of this may be secondary to the daily pivoting that teachers may have to do as the Internet connection fades between weak and strong. During these times, teachers may have to shift from their designed lesson to an alternative “unplugged” assignment.

Please know that the Hanover Technology Operations Department has been working to address and mitigate this issue since the start of the school year, but our infrastructure is insufficient to handle the traffic and bandwidth required of all of the devices in use on any given day. This is the latest from our Tech ops Department:

Verizon is scheduled to install a new fiber optic cable this Thursday, November 3rd. We contracted with a third-party company, Cogent, to use this line to provide a dedicated level of Internet service. It is not a shared service like our existing Verizon FiOS connection. The additional line should resolve intermittent slow Internet at HHS and Cedar once the line is active sometime next week.

We ask for your patience and understanding during this phase of network challenges that we are going through at HHS. Our teachers and staff are doing their very best given the circumstances, and we will continue to collaborate with students and families to ensure appropriate assessment and grading practices will take place, albeit with possible delays, as per usual.

Thank you for your resiliency,

Matthew Mattos
