Hanover High School News and Notes 9/13/20

Back to School 2020-2021

We will be publishing student schedules at 4:00 PM this afternoon.  Students will use these schedules for orientations scheduled for this Monday and Tuesday as communicated in an earlier message.

A Quick Note About Scheduling

With more than 800 students, each of whom requires a unique seven-period schedule, the task of building the HHS schedule is always complex.  Even during a typical year, it's impossible to satisfy all course requests, especially with regard to electives.  Needless to say, the current circumstances (e.g. cohort considerations, space restrictions, and safety protocols – to name only a few) have posed exceptional challenges.  Please understand that schedule changes will be extremely difficult and often impossible this year

Although HHS normally requires students to maintain at least 25 credits in their schedules, we are prepared to reduce the minimum to 20 credits if necessary (and feasible) for juniors and seniors this year only.

Weekly and Daily Bell Schedule

It can look intimidating at first, but it really captures all we need to communicate in terms of class-period times and placements, cohort days, common remote Wednesdays, lunches, and length of passing times.  Key notes:

  • Our hybrid weeks will be from Wednesday to Tuesday.  (Not Monday – Friday).  Cohorts will be meeting simultaneously on remote Wednesdays, making this day ideal to communicate information for the week and examine the past week in review.
  • Our first day of school begins Wednesday, September 16th – remotely.
  • Wednesday, September 16th is the first day of our first week of school.
  • There are 5 school days to the week.
  • I’ll be explaining the purpose of “flex block” in a future message.
  • The “A” cycle and “B” cycle weeks only pertain to electives – courses scheduled as every-other-day classes.

When I send along our Handbook insert early this week, I’ll provide further information, guidance, and understanding regarding the daily/weekly schedule.  We’ll be explaining to our students this Monday and Tuesday at orientation as well.

Finally, I'll be sending along later today an inquiry as to HHS family technology needs.

That’s it for now.  Be well.  Be safe.
