Hanover High School News and Updates 9/22/22

Many of you may know me as Mr. Hannigan, wellness and physical education teacher at Hanover High School, and for some of you, as Coach Hannigan of the boy's varsity basketball team. I am proud to announce that I am now the new Dean of Students at Hanover High School. Since this is a brand-new position, that is evolving every day, I am eager to share with you a current overview of what I will be working on in my new role with HHS students and families:

Student Affairs

I look forward to working with our Student Council, National Honor Society, and other various clubs as a liaison, offering any help I can.  I also plan to be as visible as I can during the school day, during arrival/dismissal, in our classrooms, hallways, and cafeteria to be available for student needs. Additionally, I will make every effort I can, along with the main office administrators, to be at various extracurricular student events and activities, such as athletics, performing arts, and school functions (dances/proms). I also plan to work with all invested stakeholders to elevate school climate and culture, as well as enhancing our school security.

Attendance

We all know that elevated student daily attendance has a direct positive impact on academic performance, therefore I will work with all students to improve their daily attendance. It's our goal to maximize our students' attendance and time on learning, so I will be assisting the main office and guidance staff in promoting consistency in daily attendance!

Community Service hours/opportunities

All students know that they should be attaining 10 community service hours per school year, therefore I will assist students in tracking their respective community service hours served and seeking opportunities to attain them. Students should feel free to come to me with any questions, concerns, and/or ideas of how we can accomplish their community service requirements.

Discipline/Accountability

As Dean of Students, I will be handling all student discipline issues and referrals. These issues will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the rules and regulations put forth in the HHS Student Handbook Code of Conduct. For the most part, HHS students are familiar with our Code of Conduct, but I plan on elevating their awareness of some key points throughout the course of the school year so they do not lean toward violating them. One key point that is currently an issue that I would like to let students and families know about is unexcused tardiness in the morning that is timely enough to be seen as a class cut of 1st period, and also 2nd period based on arrival time. Unexcused tardiness of this nature will be enforced by an extended office detention (2 hours). I am hopeful that students and families understand this and that it will not be a recurring issue.

Let’s work together to make sure all students are in each class every day!

Thank you for your continued support of our students,

Nick Hannigan
Dean of Students
