Hanover High School Vision and Hearing Screenings 4/1/22

In accordance with Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) regulations (105CMR 200.400), vision and hearing screenings will take place on April 4, 2022. Vision and hearing screenings are conducted yearly in grade 10.

If your child wears glasses, please have them bring them to school on April 4th. If your child does not pass the vision or hearing screenings, you will be notified by your school nurse through School Messenger (phone and email). If you prefer that your child not participate in the health screenings, please notify your child’s school nurse in writing

Vision Screening Additional Information

MDPH has updated its vision screening protocols and tools to be more sensitive and specific, and easier for younger students and students with disabilities to complete. If you are interested in learning more about the new vision screening protocols, read the Updated Massachusetts Vision Screening Protocols.

The MDPH recommends that, in addition to the routine vision screening, a comprehensive eye exam by an eye doctor experienced in treating children should be sought in the following cases:

  • Children unable to complete, or who refuse to complete a vision screening
  • Children whose disability or behavior prevents them from performing a standard screening
  • Parent or teacher concerns about the student meeting academic benchmarks
  • Children who receive additional educational support such as an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • Parent, teacher, nurse, or screener concerns about the potential existence of a vision problem, even if the child has passed a recent vision screening

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision for any reason, please do not hesitate to schedule an appointment for a complete eye examination with a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist.

Other Screenings

Height, weight, and postural screenings will resume in the Fall of 2022. Verbal Screening for Substance Use Disorder (SBIRT) for grade 8 and grade 9 students will take place from March 29, 2022, through April 14, 2022. A separate email will be sent to grade 8 and 9 parents/guardians with additional information about SBIRT.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s school nurse.

Sincerely,

Matthew Mattos, Principal
Rosalind Davis, RN, BS, NCSN, School Nurse
