Hanover Public Schools Outdoor Recess Guidance 4/28/21

Hanover Health

As you may know, Governor Baker recently provided updated guidance for increased flexibility around masking while engaging in outdoor activities.  This is certainly a step forward for our community (and state), but school-specific guidelines remain in place until we are instructed otherwise by DESE or the Massachusetts DPH.  As a school district, we are required to follow the guidance provided by DESE. Please note the latest guidance pertaining to outdoor recess, masking, and quarantine (please see attached):

  • At outdoor recess, if masked, students and staff must maintain at least 3 feet distance from one another.
  • At outdoor recess, If not wearing masks (i.e. mask break), students and staff must maintain at least 6 feet of distance.
  • At outdoor recess, cohorts should be maintained if possible, but they are not required.
  • Playgrounds require normal routine cleaning but do not require disinfection.
  • Cleaning and disinfection of wood surfaces and ground cover are not recommended.
  • Shared items such as balls and jump ropes should be cleaned between each use.
  • Students should wash or sanitize their hands before and after recess.
  • Even if fully vaccinated, staff and students are required to wear a mask at all times, except during a dedicated mask break, or while eating and drinking (while 6 feet apart).
  • Those who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine or test as long as they are asymptomatic.
  • There is no duration limit for fully vaccinated status at this time (previously 90 days).

Until these guidelines change, we will be maintaining the routines and procedures that have kept our students and staff safe at school.  Thank you for your continued support and patience.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
