Hanover Public Schools Weather Update 9/6/23

Hanover H

As you are aware, we are experiencing unseasonably hot weather this week with heat advisories posted in parts of Massachusetts. As always, our priority is the health and safety of your student and to maintain a school environment conducive to learning. At this time, closing school is not an option under consideration, but we will work with our nursing staff to make decisions to keep everyone as safe as possible. If your child has any heat-related illness or medical concerns, please be sure to notify your child’s school nurse to ensure we have the most accurate and current information.

When heat and humidity reach the current levels, it is especially uncomfortable at Cedar School and Hanover Middle School where air conditioning is limited to only a few locations. Each of our schools has building-specific plans to manage classroom and outdoor activities given the temperature, and our faculty and staff are doing everything possible to keep their normal routines. I am very appreciative of their efforts to get all of our students off to a great start!

For the remainder of this week, our nursing staff advises that your child wear loose-fitting summer clothing and send water in a refillable bottle. Some actions our school staff will be taking during this time include:

  • Encouraging students to drink extra water during the day.
  • Utilizing shady spaces during outdoor time whenever possible.
  • Encouraging less strenuous physical activity and frequent rest periods.
  • Monitoring and treating for signs of heat-related illness.
  • Following the MIAA Heat Modification Policy to adjust practices to limit the intensity and duration of activity for high school athletics.

This pattern of hot days will end soon enough, and before long, we will be sharing information about winter storms. We look forward to a few months of more enjoyable fall weather in between.

Sincerely,

Matt Ferron
Superintendent
