School Safety Update 12/16/21

Hanover H

We have become aware of a social media post that has been shared widely this week across the country on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17, 2021.

The post is part of another disruptive national TikTok trend and did not originate in Hanover. We do not have any credible or viable information of a threat, however, we are monitoring the situation and taking it seriously. As always, the district is working collaboratively with the Hanover Police Department, and we will have an increased police presence at our schools on Friday to provide assurance to our school community that we all stand together to keep our children and staff safe.

If you or your child become aware of any potential threats posted to social media or anywhere else, please call your child’s school or the Hanover Police Department.  You may also use the “See Something – Say Something” feature on our website to share information.

Even when these posts are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. I am angry and disappointed that we are once again taking action over a social media post intended to cause fear and anxiety to families who just want their children to go to school and learn without worry. We are ready to help and support any students who may feel anxious.

As always, thank you for your partnership as we work to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,

Matt Ferron, Superintendent
Walter Sweeney, Jr., Chief of Police
Joel Barrett, HMS Assistant Principal, HPS Security Liaison
John Voelkel, School Resource Officer
