Read Across America at Hanover Middle School: March 3, 2008

Read Across America is a program sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) and
Dr. Suess Enterprises along with 45 national partner organizations. The program encourages young and old Americans to open a book and celebrate reading.

Grade 5 students at the Hanover Middle School were visited by "local celebrities" who shared their favorite books by reading to grade 5 classes.

This year’s celebrity readers included Capt. Jim Gallagher from the Hanover Fire Dept., DARE Officer Mike McKeever from the Hanover Police Dept., John Curtis Children’s Librarian Lynne Campbell, local writer Bob Sigsby, and John Thomson, 2007 recipient of the Spirit of Hanover Community Service Award. Traveling from out of state to read was Wick Haylon, Niantic, Connecticut’s 2007 Firefighter of the Year.

Hanover Public Schools was represented by celebrity readers Dr. Kristine Nash, Superintendent of Schools; Alice Downs, HMS School Nurse; Shelly Grabowski, HMS Secretary; and HMS Principal Charlie Egan.

Grade 5 students showed their appreciation of the efforts of these generous community volunteers.
