Advice for Future Music Majors

Majoring in Music

So you want to be a music major...?
Majoring in music is fun but it is also a lot of work. If this is something you are considering make sure you understand that although it can be very rewarding it takes a lot of hard work and many hours of practice. This hard work and practice needs to start well before you arrive at college.

Start Early
To become a music major you must not only apply and be accepted to the college/university, but also pass an audition with the music department. This requires a lot of preparation. Ideally you should take private lessons for at least 2 years minimum before your audition. You will need to start preparing for your audition at least a 3 months before the audition date (more would be better). Keep in mind audition dates are most likely before the application deadline for your college application. Check the college's websites you are considering for more information. Also check the college's websites before preparing your audition because each college may have different audition requirements. Most requirements are equivalent to playing an All-State/Senior District/SEMSBA Solo. Auditioning for Districts/All-State is a great way to prepare for college auditions, and is highly encouraged. You can see how deciding to major in music requires years not weeks or months to prepare.

Other Considerations
You may need to take a music theory test and a piano placement test. See your music teachers for some basic music theory help or take AP Music Theory which is offered at HHS. The piano placement test is usually only for students who have some piano experience. For music education, frequently an interview is also involved. Composers should be prepared to show a portfolio of compositions and arrangements in a variety of genres.

Please make sure you keep your music teachers informed on your plans. They know what you need to do and can help guide you through the process. Tell them even if you are just considering it. The earlier they know the more guidance they can give you!
