Language-Based Programming

Program Description

The goal of the language-based programming at Center Elementary School is to support students in developing the skills required to become successful in the general education classroom. At the elementary grade levels, the programming is more restrictive; however, as the students become older and progress to HMS and HHS the language-based classrooms become less restrictive, allowing for more inclusion opportunities and more access to the general education curriculum with support as needed.

Academically, the purpose of the language-based classroom is to remediate literacy skills, this instruction will be complemented with robust core academic content. Curriculum and content are modified and adapted as necessary to include systematic multi‐model evidence-based instruction.

The language-based learning classroom at Center School is a substantially separate classroom for students with average cognitive abilities who evidence difficulty with language, which directly impacts speaking, listening, reading, writing, spelling, and math. These students have been unable to make progress in other support settings and require intensive remediation to access and participate in the general education curriculum and remediate their literacy skills.

This program has a special education teacher and classroom tutors depending on the student population in collaboration with a speech and language therapist and an occupational therapist who are attached to the classroom.

*Currently the language-based programs at all levels are monitored in coaching sessions with Adam Hickey the research coordinator for Landmark who is also the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the International Dyslexia Association. He continues to provide, coaching, professional development, support, training, and advice in all facets of our language-based programming.
