Hanover High School POST

Providing Opportunities for Students in Transition

Program Description

The goal of the POST program at Hanover High School is to support the acquisition of functional academics and daily living skills and to collaborate with students and families to support student achievement of a fulfilling future as a productive member of their community. Students who participate in the POST program have determined, in conjunction with their Team,  that they require specially designed instruction in various transition services beyond the typical four years of high school. This program is individualized for each student. The POST program at Hanover High School is designed to address the process of student transition from high school to adult life. Each student’s schedule is determined by the Team process considering the need for any specially designed instruction. The curriculum is heavily modified and is presented using multiple modes of instruction paired with positive reinforcement and manipulatives through the use of authentic and real life experiences when possible. Social Thinking and Coping strategies are implemented throughout the day by all program staff.

While considering individual interests, abilities, and personal vision, the activities and components of the program are developed for each student’s needs individually. The areas of functional academics with real-world application, vocational/employment and community skills, functional living skills, social skills, and self-advocacy skills are a focal point. The goals of this program are to provide students with multiple opportunities for improving social, vocational, and personal independence. Students are supported by job coaches and special education staff while focusing on increasing their independence, employability/soft skills with various vocational tasks in both the school and community. Through the Team process, students and their families are connected with Adult Service Agency liaisons to assist in easing the transition to post-secondary supports.

POST students may participate in various vocational and community opportunities to support their transition needs and goals. Students often participate in community trips to practice money and socialization skills. Students may participate in various vocational experiences such as working in our own small business, the Cedar St. Cafe - at HHS and Cedar School. Some POST participants attend transition opportunities through Bridgewater State University such as TAB, SALS, ICEI (all dependent on space/availability and BSU admittance). School-based internships may also be available such as clerical work and/or supporting the School Store at Salmond School, Cafeteria crew - custodial work, Teacher Aide program, and Community-based internships such as local area restaurants, Family Dollar, Petco.
