Hanover Middle School LBP

Language Based Programming

Program Description

The goal of the language-based programming at Hanover Middle School is to support students in developing the skills required to become successful in the general education classroom.

Academically, the purpose of the language-based classroom is to remediate literacy skills. This instruction will be complemented with robust core academic content. Curriculum and content are modified and adapted as necessary to include systematic multi‐model evidence-based instruction.

The language-based programming classrooms at Hanover Middle School are for students who have not made effective progress despite having received intensive special education services within the general education setting. In the language-based classrooms, students receive English and/or Math instruction in a small substantially separate classroom setting taught by a special educator, supported by a tutor or paraprofessional, with consultation from a speech and language pathologist. As part of their instruction, students develop an understanding of their particular learning style and focus on the strategies that meet their individual needs. The intent is to provide students with the tools necessary to afford them the opportunity to transition to co-taught general education ELA and Math courses and ultimately find academic success in any and all general education courses. Instruction for those students who transition to general education ELA and Math courses takes place in consultation with the student's special education team.

Students continue to take Social Studies/History and Science classes within the general education setting with the appropriate accommodations, modifications, and paraprofessional/ABA tutor support as needed. Students also participate in general education classes for specialist/elective classes.

*Currently the language-based programming at all levels are monitored in close consultation with Adam Hickey the research coordinator for Landmark who is also the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the International Dyslexia Association. He continues to provide coaching, professional development, support, training, and advice in all facets of our language-based programming.
